Money is one of those things that everyone knows exists, but few people actually understand. How is it that a piece of paper (or a number on a screen) can be worth anything? The answer lies in the history of fiat currency. Fiat currency is money that has been assigned value by a government or other authority, rather than being backed by a physical commodity like gold or silver. In other words, it's money that's worth something because we collectively agree that it is. This might sound like a recipe for disaster, but fiat currency has actually been around for centuries, and it's only become more prevalent in recent years.
